Karen Buck-Mackintosh is a photographer and mixed media artist whose work is rooted in personal reflection, emotional exploration, and a deep connection to her environment. Her art, often cathartic in nature, blends memory and material into expressive visual narratives.

In recent years, she has been exploring cyanotype printing, a sun-exposure technique that produces striking Prussian blue images. Using found natural objects and large negatives, she creates one-of-a-kind contact prints that blur the line between photography and printmaking.

Karen holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick (1981), and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto (1983). Her work has been widely exhibited, including solo shows at the Women’s Art Association of Canada, Toronto (2020); Kawartha Art Gallery, Lindsay (2019); and The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa (1995).

Her award-winning pieces have been included in numerous juried and group exhibitions, such as the Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts (2017, 2018), the Quinte Arts Council’s International Women’s Day exhibitions (2024, 2025), Parrott Gallery juried shows (2024), and multiple juried shows at the Art Gallery of Northumberland (2020, 2022, 2024). She has also participated in Toronto’s CONTACT Photography Festival and RMG Exposed, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery’s photography auction. In 2023, she was featured in the Durham Reach exhibition, celebrating the RMG’s 50th anniversary.

Her work is included in the permanent collections of The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa), The Owens Art Gallery (Sackville), and in private collections throughout Canada and the United States.

Karen lives and works in Madoc, Ontario, and is an active member of both the Belleville Art Association and the Quinte Arts Council.
