Cobie Cruz, born in Manila, Philippines, in 1961, is a celebrated abstract artist whose work explores the interplay of composition, color, and texture. A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, majoring in Advertising, Cobie’s artistic journey began in the vibrant creative scene of Manila. Before transitioning to professional painting, he built a successful career as an art director and TV commercial director.

In 2005, Cobie migrated to Canada, where he rediscovered and refined his artistic voice. Influenced by his late father, renowned floral artist Cris Cruz, Cobie developed a unique approach to abstraction. His creative process, which he calls “push and pull,” embraces spontaneity and experimentation. He begins each piece without preconceived notions, allowing thoughts and emotions to guide his choice of colors and forms. This dynamic process often involves altering, erasing, and reworking elements until the painting comes to life.

Cobie’s works, characterized by bold brushstrokes and thoughtful contrasts, evoke emotion and introspection. His use of vibrant hues juxtaposed with calm tones reflects a deep engagement with the world around him. Represented by notable galleries in Ontario, Cobie has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Canada and the Philippines.

A poignant turning point in Cobie’s career came during a visit to Manila, where he fulfilled a promise to his father to never give up on his art. This commitment continues to drive him, resulting in works that resonate with authenticity and passion. Whether through radiant colors, monochromatic palettes, or lyrical compositions, Cobie Cruz’s art is a testament to his enduring exploration of “all the possibilities” of abstraction.
